Notations:
An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of Ms 7.0 (NEIC) Mw 7.4 (NEIC) occurred at 11:07:52 UTC, April 3, in New Britain Islands region of Eastern Papua New Guinea, Indonesia. The quake was centered about 125 miles southwest of Rabaul and along the northern shore 42 miles west of Hoskins. (See Map)
?
Although there have been no reports from the region at this time, given the location and magnitude some damage and injuries may have occurred.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coastal regions in the area.
?
It was the largest quake in eastern Papua New Guinea since a M7.2 event in December 22, 1997. In the passage between New Britain and Bougainville Island, there was a M7.8 temblor in 1995.
