An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of Mb 6.1 occurred 23:22 UTC in the Kermadec Islands region of the South Pacific. The quake was centered about 410 miles northeast of East Cape, North Island, New Zealand. The New Zealand Seismological Observatory at the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences, Ltd., at Wellington, reported a magnitude of M7.6 and a focal depth of 518 km - very different readings than the analysis provided by the National Earthquake Information Service, U.S. Geological Survey, in Golden, CO. Data is too preliminary to be definitive.

The Washington Post has reported the quake was felt from Gisborne in the North Island down to Christchurch on the South Island. It was felt like a slow rolling and swaying motion across much of the Island. TransRail, New Zealand's rail system, was shut down for inspectors to check the track. The quake triggered too far away to have caused damage or injuries, and too deep to have generated a tsunami .
