Bombay Beach earthquake swarm, continued.

People clearly noted the stongest jolt was the M4.1 at 12:45 p.m. This was the lunch hour and many people were sitting down. Seismo-Watch and the USGS received felt reports from all up and down the Salton Trough, form the Imperial Valley in the south to Palm Desert at central Coachella Valley to the north (See the Seismo-Watch Coachella Valey weekly earthquake report).

Dish and glassware rattled, hanging plants first vibrated then swayed, and a few light objucts toppled from tables and shelves. Pictures were knocked askew and windows vibrated. Each event caused creaking and rumbling sounds and one person noted they had different pitches and tones.

Several noted their cats were spooked, some dashing for cover.

One person shopping during the M4.1 event said there was a loud rumble and items from all over the store could be heard jiggling and shaking. They noted that everyone stopped for a second until it was done, then they went on. It was very odd.

Most people said they were exhilerated and described a heightened moment of awareness. A few were frightened or thought it was scary.

Perhaps significant about these series is that the activity occurred along the locked southern segment of the San Andreas Fault. The last events to top the M3.0 mark along this segment occurred the day of the Lavic Lake (Hector Mine) M7.1 earthquake on October 16, 1999, and raised serious concerns of a potential large earthquake. One of the events in that sequence measured M4.0.

Prior to 1999, there have been only five M3+ tremors along this segment of the San Andreas fault since 1993. See a list.
