Minor Earthquake Shakes The Sierra West of Truckee, California

TRUCKEE, CALIFORNIA, March 27, 2001 (Seismo-Watch) -- According to the United States Geological Survey, a minor earthquake measuring a magnitude 3.7 occurred at 3:47 a.m. PST in the Sierra about 15 miles west-northwest of Truckee, California near Soda Springs, but was not strong enough to cause any damage.

The quake was centered on the north side of Interstate 80 about 3 miles from Soda Springs beneath the ridge called Buzzards Roost at a depth of 12.6 km (7.8 miles). The type of fault motion was strike-slip, or sideways movement. Although there were no foreshocks, it was probably an aftershock to the December 2, 2000 magnitude 4.8 earthquake which occurred in the same area and caused minor, localized damage, including broken windows, broken glassware and toppled commercial shelf items.

The quake was widely felt in the area, jarring people from sleep as far away as Truckee, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City and Kings Beach, California. There are unconfirmed reports the temblor was felt in Reno, Nevada and there were no reports from west of Auburn, California.

Sleepy residents said shaking was brief, rattling windows and glassware, but was not strong enough to topple items from tables and shelves. Small earthquakes registering in the magnitude 1.0 and 2.0 range are common in this portion Sierra, with tectonic action happening on nearly a weekly basis. Earthquakes measuring in the magnitude 3.0+ range are rare and occur every few years.
