A series of earthquakes flattened an area of northern Afghanistan March 25 and 26, 2002 claiming at least 2,000 lives. The war torn nation's interim government has appealed for international assistance with Interior Minister Yunus Qanuni telling Reuters that the government simply cannot cope with the disaster in the mountainous region.
